Context

The project target is to develop in line analyse strategies and combustion control strategies of combustion engine, based on cost effective technologies for further industrial applications.
Aboard Engineering task is to develop engine control strategies based on cylinder pressure data models.

Aboard Engineering aims to reduce gas emission with those new models. The expected results are based on a vehicle demonstration, that is currently meeting the EURO 4 standard and will have to reject pollutants lower than the EURO 5 regulation limits without consuming more fuel.

Cylinder Pressure signals acquisitions and treatments

The demonstration car is a production Ford Fiesta, motorized by a 1.6L MPFI natural aspirated benzine engine. The cylinder head has been modified for adapting four cylinder pressure sensors (Continental Automotive wish is one of this project partner is currently developing those sensors for an industrial application).

The acquisition and the treatment of the cylinder pressure signals are done by the ACOVI product, developed by Aboard Engineering.
ACOVI operates an angular data sampling acquisition of the cylinder pressure signals at the 0,5° crankshaft frequency, on the complete combustion engine cycle and for the four cylinders.

Real time calculations will be then done inside ACOVI in order to extract, for each cylinder, some combustion parameterslike the IMEP (Indicated Mean Pressure), the CA50 or MFB50 (50% of the Mass Fraction Burned) and the max pressure with its dedicated crankshaft angle. Those values are calculated at each top dead center and sent to the EMS via the CAN bus  of the vehicle.

The EMS uses those combustion parameters within new EMS algorithms developed by Aboard Engineering, in order to increase engine performances regarding gas emission reduction.
